Learn how to make basic meatballs in just four easy steps, then get creative by adding your own embellishments - such as herbs, spices, grated cheese or vegetables.
Combine meat, egg and breadcrumbs
In a large bowl, place about 675g, or 1 1/2 lb, of the mince of your choice: beef, pork, turkey, veal or a combination.
Add 2 beaten eggs.
And 60g, or 2 oz, of fresh breadcrumbs.
If the breadcrumbs are dry, rehydrate them in a little milk or stock until they're softened. Then squeeze out the liquid, and add to the meat mixture.
Flavour the mix with a teaspoon each of salt and pepper. If you’re following a recipe - or you want to add a specific flavour such as garlic, oregano or thyme to your meatballs - add it now.
Mix it together
Use your hands or a couple of forks to mix the ingredients lightly so the mince doesn’t compact too much.
Shape the meatballs
Scoop up a portion of the mince mixture, and roll it lightly between the palms of your hands to make a ball.
To get same-sized meatballs:
Use an ice cream scoop to create uniform portions—the meatballs will look great in a dish and cook evenly too.If your recipe calls for mini meatballs, use a smaller scoop for bite-sized meatballs. These are perfect for party nibbles or to use in soup.
