Traditions of Dragobete, the celebration of Romanian love
Legend has it that Dragobete is the son of Baba Dochia, representing, in opposition to her, good mood and ardent love.
According to Agerpres, on the Romanian lands, Dragobetele, which preserves some characteristics of Cupid, the god of love in Roman mythology, is celebrated, depending on the ethnographic area, on one of the days from the end of February and the beginning of March.
Depending on the region, it is also called "Spring Head", "Spring Sanctuary", "Ioan Dragobete", "Ladies", "The Naval", "The engagement or the companion of the birds".
In the Romanian tradition, Dragobetele marked the beginning of spring, February 24th not being chosen by chance, this means the beginning of the agricultural year, the moment when all nature is reborn, the birds look for their nests and, according to some popular beliefs, the bear comes out of the den. With nature, love also revived, and Dragobetele marked the day when the whole breath celebrated the renewal of nature and prepared for the coming of spring.
On his birthday, it is believed that non-migratory birds gather in flocks, chirp, "fly", mate and begin to build their nests in which to raise their young. The unpaired birds on this day remained awkward and without chicks until next year's Dragobetele. Like birds, girls and boys had to meet to be in love throughout the year.
On this day, in the villages where the custom is still kept, one can hear the saying: "Dragobetele kisses girls".
In almost all parts of the country, if the day was beautiful, the girls and boys would gather in groups and go out into the forest, barking and chirping to pick the first flowers of spring. From the unmelted snow to Dragobete, young girls and wives made reserves of water with which they washed themselves on certain days of the year, in order to preserve their beauty.
Dragobete traditions. What should girls do to be loved all year round?
The day of Dragobete, the god of youth, joy and love has ancient origins. Dragobete is a character taken from the ancient Dacians and later transformed into a protector of young people and patron of love. Following in the footsteps of certain popular legends, it seems that Dragobete (also called "Spring Head", "Raider" or "Bird's Fiancé") was none other than the son of Baba Dochia, an extremely handsome and loving young man who seduced the women who they got in the way.
However, Dragobete has remained to this day as the supreme symbol of local love. Dragobete twins in its essence both the beginning and the end - the beginning of a new season and the revival of nature, the end of worldly delights, because the Holy Lent of Easter begins.
Ethnologist Andrei Popa lists some of Dragobete's habits and explains their purpose:
The most interesting messages of Dragobete
On February 24, love is celebrated, the strongest feeling. Romanians love Dragobete in Romanian and have the opportunity to express and prove their feelings through the most interesting and unexpected gestures, but also through the most beautiful messages.
You make me laugh, you make me cry, you make me feel alive. You make me love!
To love means to live through the other, to feel the need to tell him, to ask him for advice, to give him. To love means to complement each other. Happy DRAGOBETE!
Love is all we have, it is the only way we can help each other!
If I think only of you, does that mean I love you? Does dreaming about you every night mean I love you? If I want to be alone with you alone in a forest, does that mean I love you? I think I love you, what do you think?
Coffee from 10. Ep. 17 & # 8211 Valentine's Day or Dragobete?
As we have Women's Day, Sleep Day, World Car Free Day, Walking Day, Cycling Day and other similar days, it seems to me at least fair to have a day of love.
That at least on that day we would feel special, if in the others he forgot our land at the office or washing clothes with the children hanging by us.
Now, it's Valentine's Day, it's Dragobete, who's left to look.
If, however, we were to go to the base of meaning, St. Valentine would have been a priest who married a pagan to a Catholic, hence the meaning of love that goes beyond customs and social boundaries.
If we were to follow Dragobete's line, it seems that in the past, maybe even today in certain villages, boys chase girls with wildflowers in their hands, looking for their chosen one.
I'm not a fan of "adopted" traditions, but I wouldn't like boys running through the woods either, they just stop me and they catch me. I don't know exactly where these somewhat "scary" traditions come from, but I am rather moved by the love taken to a higher level, the overcoming of social limits, the love that resists.
Eventually, I too am married to a Catholic and only a graceful and wise soul was able to see where others were blind. In the human soul.
My dear ones, whether you choose to celebrate or not, in American or Romanian style, do not forget that love is the only one that persists in the world.
Wars are fought, people die, hearts are broken and children are born out of love.
Whatever name it bears, love deserves appreciation every day of our lives.
That it's a smile, a good thought, a phone call, a quiet evening, a flower, a healthy menu, a good coffee in the morning, don't let the day go by without this "something" that will be part of the routine, but carries in it the heart of the beloved.
The long story, in the episode with no. 16 from Coffee at 10.
If you liked it and want more, like and share, let's get to the bottom of it!
Thanks to Ada and I.
DRAGOBETELE 2018: What are Dragobete's traditions among Romanians
Dragobete's holiday has a rich and interesting symbolism. Dragobetele twins in essence both the beginning and the end - the beginning of a new season and the revival of nature, the end of worldly delights as the Holy Lent of Easter begins. In ancient times (in some areas even today!), On this day of great celebration, young people dressed in beautiful, proper clothes used to gather in the woods and pick in the bouquets the first flowers of spring. Picking flowers continues with good cheer and songs, with a kind of game called & # 8220flying & # 8221. At noon, the girls ran to the village, and the boys ran away, trying to catch them and give them a kiss. If the boy was dear to the girl, she let herself be caught, later taking place the kiss considered equivalent to the engagement and the beginning of the love between the two. Towards evening, the engagement was to be announced to the village community and family members. Those who participated in the celebration, respecting the tradition, were considered to be blessed that year. They will have plenty, being spared in exchange for disease and fever. According to some superstitions of the elders, those who did not celebrate this day were punished for not being able to love that year. This custom gave rise to the famous shout or threatening jokes & # 8220Dragobetele kisses girls! & # 8221
If the weather was gloomy on this day, if it was very cold, raining or snowing, the young people would gather in a house to make Dragobete, to party, to make friends, to play games and guides. In some areas, young girls used to throw accusations at the hatred charms made against rivals in love. Also, the young lads easily raised their arm in the shape of a cross and touched their cuts, taking the oath to remain blood brothers for life. On this day, the village elders gave special care to the animals in the yard, but also to the birds. The elders believed that on this day the birds choose their mate for life and go about building their nests. At the end of winter and beginning of spring, Dragobete officiated the wedding of the birds in the sky. The slaughter of animals is forbidden on this day. You are not allowed to intervene in the mating of birds, it is believed. In some parts of the country, on this day, young people unite their destinies through engagement, promising their faith and love.
It is said that unmarried young women have to collect & # 8222snow's snow & # 8221, ie the remnants of snow they encounter on the way and then melt them. The water thus obtained was believed in the past to be magical and to help the charms of love, and girls must wash their faces with it in order to be beautiful and conquering.
In some areas of Romania, asparagus roots are extracted from the ground, which people later use as a cure for curing certain diseases. It is mandatory for men to be in cordial relations with females on this day. Men are not allowed to harass women, nor to engage in quarrels, for thus a spring with bad luck and a not at all favorable year awaited them. Both boys and girls have a duty to rejoice on this day in order to have love all year round. If they want love to stay alive throughout the year, young couples need to kiss on this day. Field work, weaving, sewing, heavy household chores are not allowed on this day. Instead, cleaning is allowed, being considered a source of growth and freshness. You are not allowed to cry on Dragobete Day. It is said that the tears that flow on this day are a source of trouble and upset in the months to come. In other parts of the country, the eve of Dragobete is similar to the symbolism of the night of Epiphany. The young girls, curious to find out about their bear, put their holy basil under their pillow, believing that Dragobetele will help them find true love.
How did Nata Albot congratulate Andrei Bolocan de Dragobete? "I do not think you are my half. ”
Nata Albot and Andrei Bolocan form one of the most beautiful and beloved couples in our country. The two educate four children together, produce the show "Internetu 'Grăiește" and it seems that they are a truly fulfilled family. It seems that the two understand each other very well and complement each other, living to the fullest and enjoying every day of their lives, despite all the problems and small misunderstandings.
"We are not always well. There is nothing perfect with us. I don't think you're my half (because you're a very interesting whole).
But I am very grateful to destiny for the chance it gave me to take our hand one day and walk together, without knowing exactly where.
And just on the way I discovered how nice it is to snort in laughter in unison, after we turned off the light and said "Good night", how holy it is to cry together at the same time in the movie, how great is to say around 3 in the morning "Let's move the couch to another room" and you say come on, how nice it is to receive good knives for my birthday, because you know that for me that matters and how well you do to entertain our children while I struggle in another room in the statistics course.
I love this holiday and I really liked Dragobete to have a dear soul to think about gratefully. ", Nata wrote in the description of a video with the two of them.

About Dragobete, Maria Bocşe writes in the book Romanian traditional customs from Transylvania: ,,In the local traditions of the Carpathian area, Dragobetele, also called "Cape of Spring", was celebrated between February 24-28 or March 1-25, a local deity, borrowed from the north of the Danube and in the south, in the Balkans. It is said that Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochii, the local hypostasis of the goddess of the earth, Zea Mater, Terra Mater. He was the symbol of youth, of vigor, of beauty, of love, in opposition to old age, to the decrepitude of man and time. In other words, it was the & # 8222 threshold & # 8221 between the old year, the old age and the eternal opposition to the youth of the reborn year, knowing that once upon a time the New Year and the renewal of time were celebrated on March 1st.’’
